Photographs from the Schupmann Collection

”Collecting Worlds” as the main theme of this year's edition of INTERPHOTO was anchored in Aby Warburg's method of iconographic analysis. This made it possible to present the public with this collection of photographs, drawn from the private collection of Ingrid and Michael Schupmann, who built it up over 15 years, until  2002 with certain additions till now, deliberately eschewing classical museum methods. Their choices always remained subjective and based on the need to find a personal connection with each photograph they purchased. This is the perfect complement to the ideas of Warburg, for whom the development of culture was the spread of the energy of symbol and allegory. The Schupmann Collection, created out of the need of the heart, in conclusion has become a fascinating story about the history of black and white photography (with few exceptions) in West Germany, showing the various artistic tendencies developing after the Second World War in the Federal Republic of Germany. A very important part of the collection is represented by representatives of subjective photography and related trends, which profoundly influenced the form of the development of world photography. Artists such as Otto Steinert, Heinz Hajek-Halke, Siegfried Lauterwasser, Peter Keetman, Wolfgang Reisewitz, Toni Schneiders, Ludwig Windstosser, Kilian Breier and many others, examples of whose work we have the pleasure to present, have become an inspiration for subsequent generations of photographers.
